Huggard, including clients, staff and visitors are part of the community in which we work and live.
As good neighbours, we have a responsibility to be good citizens and to keep our buildings and streets, safe, clean and well maintained.
We work with very vulnerable people and it’s also important that our centre and surrounding areas are safe and positive spaces for them as well.
What we do
Clean and Tidy
Clients and Staff…
• Clean Hansen Street daily and
• Carry out daily litter picks on Dumballs Road.
• Conduct needle sweeps in the community and around the Butetown area on a regular basis.
We also respond immediately to requests to remove remove needles and other drug paraphernalia from around the area.
Managing anti-social street activity and large groups
• Huggard has 24 hour security on-site and a daily presence along Dumballs Road. Our security teams work with local businesses, carrying out patrols and responding to reports of anti-social behaviour.
• Anti-social street activity is addressed through this process with clear expectations of clients on how they should behave in the neighbourhood.
• We work to ensure the most vulnerable are supported, and those causing harm to them and others are prevented from doing so.
• We have a comprehensive CCTV system and our safety officers wear body cams, enabling them to gather evidence to support prosecutions and exclusions from the area.
Rough Sleeping and Tents
Huggard is an emergency service and is available to anyone who is newly homeless, as well as people living on the streets.
However, we never encourage rough sleeping. It is extremely dangerous. This is why we look to have any tents removed after accommodating those living in them.
Our ultimate aim is to support people to move into – and to be able to remain – in a home of their own.
Working with the police
We record all incidents and, in partnership with the police, ensure criminal behaviour is addressed and, where appropriate, the offenders prosecuted.
We also work with the police to ensure preventative measures are in place to prevent anti-social behaviour occurring.
If large groups are present in the area, we support the police in addressing the issue, ensuring the groups are dispersed, without pushing the problem into other areas.
Harm Reduction in the locality
We have a zero tolerance of drug dealing, and alongside the police, address it locally, across Butetown and the city centre.
We provide needle bins on-site for the safe disposal of drug paraphernalia.
Huggard’s harm reduction service supports those using substances to reduce the harm to themselves and anyone around them. We run educational programmes and work with Cardiff and Vale Drug & Alcohol Service (CAVDAS).
Our aim is for Hansen Street and the surrounding areas to become “no drinking zones”.
