Services

Huggard are open 365 days of the year. This ‘hub’ provides support, advice and development opportunities to over 1,400 different homeless and vulnerable people annually within the Cardiff community.

Providing a hub for Huggard’s services, our city centre complex is open 365 days of the year providing support, advice and development expertise. We provide free and low cost meals, free clothing, laundry and personal hygiene facilities.

Huggard-Service-UserThe centre exists to provide essential assistance for homeless people while providing the opportunity to engage with them, in a warm friendly atmosphere, to help break their cycle of homelessness.

Huggard operates two day centres on site. We have a centre that seeks to help people with alcohol and drug problems and a separate centre for those who wish to avoid, and be protected from, issues relating to alcohol and drugs.

Our centres are always open, inclusive and welcoming to all.

Night Centre

Our hostel has 20 en-suite rooms where residents are allocated a room and a key worker to support them.

Every resident engages in the development of their own individual support plan which identifies their potential to live an independent sustainable life and sets goals and milestones to achieve this. The hostel accommodates a training kitchen where the residents take full advantage of the facilities.

To address rough sleeping we also provide additional emergency provision of basic accommodation. Open every day of the year Huggard provides at least 8 accommodation pods, with additional accommodation as required to meet the needs of those who would otherwise be forced to sleep rough on the streets of Cardiff.

We will continue to provide this emergency shelter until a hostel space or other accommodation becomes available.

Huggard Houses

Huggard has 14 houses in multiple occupation across Cardiff. These provide accommodation for 53 residents.

As with our hostel each resident has an individual support plan. The specific aim of these houses is to provide a supported environment, with support provided at an appropriate level, to enable residents to manage a tenancy and develop independent living skills prior to moving into their own place.

Tenant Support

Huggard runs a Tenant Support Team that takes referrals from the Local Authority of individuals who are finding it difficult to cope within their own accommodation.

Huggard-Service-User-2This provides a service that helps people to maintain their tenancies and continue to live independently through the provision of time-limited interventions that help them to manage in times of greatest need.

Training and Social Enterprise Scheme

Huggard has a fully equipped training and development suite and workshop that provide the opportunity to engage users of Huggard’s services in social, training, development and employment focussed activities.

Activities are designed to develop people’s confidence, knowledge and skills base. We also provide volunteering opportunities both within the centre and also through our User Development Programme. Through these, we support service users to gain experience and qualifications by volunteering on community projects. Huggard also offers a quality catering service through our fully equipped kitchen facilities. We cater for in-house events and are also able to provide catering services in the centre of Cardiff for corporate meetings and other events.

Advocacy Services

In addition to our other support staff, Huggard also has a volunteer Advocacy Team headed up by our Centre Advocate.

This provides a specialist intervention service that helps clients to overcome specific barriers, including access to benefits and accommodation, which prevent them from escaping the grip of homelessness.

Substance Abuse

Huggard recognises the problems that alcohol and drug use can have upon many people who are experiencing homelessness.

Working to reduce the harm caused by drugs and alcohol, our specialist Substance Misuse Service can help clients to recognise and address their issues while minimising the risks to themselves and the wider public.

This service plays a vital role in helping homeless people to access more ‘main stream’ treatment avenues.

The Bond Board

Huggard’s Bond Board helps single homeless people to access private rented accommodation through the provision of a rent deposit guarantee to landlords.

This eliminates the need for an individual with minimal resources to find a large lump sum to secure private residential accommodation. The Bond Board makes it possible for 150+ people a year to move into private, sustainable accommodation within the Cardiff Area.

People benefitting from this scheme include tenants of Huggard low support housing and residents of other frontline organisations, such as the YMCA. Members of the public are also able to access this service through our ‘drop-in’ surgeries between 09.00 and 12.00 weekdays.

The Bond Board, works with landlords and support providers, including Cardiff’s Tenant Support Team, to help ensure the long term success of any tenancy and maintain sustainability within the local community.

The Huggard Cafe

Café ‘H’ provides training and work experience for young homeless people and opportunities for customers to help Huggard’s clients by the purchase of goods and the use of a loyalty card.

‘Café H’ opened its doors in August 2014 and since then has offered a warm and welcoming venue with unrivalled quality for its service, beverages and food.

Members of the public have been ‘wowed’ by the whole experience in the sure knowledge that their custom is helping people who have experienced homelessness back onto their feet and into work.

All profits from Café ‘H’ support Huggard’s work with single homeless and vulnerable people within the Cardiff community.
